Tongues

September 4, 2009 at 2:57 pm Posted in Discipleship

I preached a message on tongues this week.  Not a message on the baptism in the Holy Ghost.  Not on the miracle of Pentecost.  Not a message on revelatory gifts.  I preached a message on tongues.

We see lots of folks saved and baptized the Holy Ghost at The Mission.  Lots of people will begin praying in tongues before they ever know what is happening.  The temptation is to leave good enough alone but I wanted to bring a message on tongues for two main reasons:

  1. You get what you teach.
Break down Greek and treat every gathering of three or more as a Bible study and you get a bunch of folks who can teach a class.  Preach faith in God and you get people of faith.  I want to build faith for the miraculous and I can’t let the possible reaction of the ignorant dictate my messages.  I teach on subjects like tongues to let heaven and hell know that we are not embarrassed by God, the Holy Ghost.  We think He is great and we want those who join us to know how great He is.
  2. We want more.
If we get folks getting filled without any teaching what might happen if we taught on it?  Tongues is not the end all be all of gifts, it is the gateway gift.  We need more folks praying in tongues because we need more people prophesying.  We need more folks praying in tongues because we need more people giving.  We need more folks praying in tongues because we need more people administrating.

The devil lies to church leaders that their people are not ready for the Baptism.  Don’t believe it.  It is the Holy Ghost that will empower your people to do all those other things you are teaching them to become.
