The First Day of Chaunukah

December 21st, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Thomas Family

As a family we don’t celebrate any of the Jewish feasts or anything like that.  Though I must admit I did have an amazing prayer time on the Day of Atonement this past year.  Thankfully my sins have been atoned once and for all.

However, I have always had an affection for Chaunukah.  There are several variations of the story of the festival but most believe that after the Maccabees reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem they removed the greek pagan idols and sought to relight the Temple’s menorah.  They could only find one vat of non-defiled oil, enough for one day.  They lit the lamp and the one days supply of oil lasted the eight days it took to make more oil.

So on Chaunakuh, people light a progressive number of candles to remember how God made the oil last an extra week.

Now, we don’t get all religious about it.  Tracey has had this menorah since before we were married and this is the first year we lit it.  And if you can’t notice, we could not find candles to fit so we had to use what we had.

Jesus said that we are not to be found without oil when He returns.  I feel that the church needs more oil and I am not talking about the greasy hair kind.  The church needs a fresh outpouring of the Holy Oil that comes from the Holy Ghost.

Matt 25:1-13
